Coffee, hair perms, nutritional supplements?

Christine asked:

Hi ladies,

What are the rules for drinking one cup of coffee per day, getting hair treatments, and eating a Zone bar (or other brand)? Are they safe for baby? I never exceed one cup of coffee per day, can’t handle it! But I’m also wondering if I need to cut out my yummy Zone bars which I snack on occasionally. I don’t think they have anything wierd in them, but not sure if something could be harmful.

Anything else I should avoid, besides the obvious: alcohol, smoking, drugs, etc.?

Thanks!

Richard

  2. well some other things to avoid is seafood with high mercury, like tuna swordfish sushi…etc. Also avoid unpasteurized cheese like feta, goat cheese, bleu cheese. I’m not sure whats in the zone bars but I would take it to ur ob/gyn and ask him/her. That’s what my midwife suggested. The best thing to do is too cut out caffeine completely, but if u cant, what ur doing is good!!

oh and I forgot ..hair treatments are ok, they say to wait until ur 2nd trimester, and also ur hair changes so it might not take to your hair while ur pregnant. Make sure ur in a well ventilated room and wear gloves if u do it yourself!!

    hope this helps!
    congrats

  3. anything with caffeine really overstimulates the baby so go for decaf, avoid pate and raw/ undercooked eggs. also any soft cheeses like brie – basically anything higher risk for you to get a stomach upset. I was also told to limit tinned tuna due to mercury content. As for the hair thing – highlighting is ok as it doesnt touch the scalp but as your hair changes when pregnant colours and perms may not take. Also avoid cat litter trays and if you do gardening – wear gloves incase of faeces in the soil. hope this helps

  4. i was told one caffinated drink a day is okay, with your hair, i think the main concern is that the fumes may make you nauseous, just make sure you’re in a well ventilated are. i have no idea what a zone bar is, but i bet it’s okay.

no raw or undercooked meat, no luch meat unless you heat it until steaming, and go easy on the fish, especially large fish like shark swordfish and tuna, they can have high mercury levels.

  5. The newest studies have proven that up to 3 cups of caffeine a day will NOT harm your baby. As for hair treatments, none of them use chemicals as harsh as they used to and most are safe enough although some OBs prefer you to wait until after your first trimester. If they were not safe, there wouldn’t be able to be pregnant cosmetologists! About the Zone Bars I’m not entirely familiar with what they are so I don’t know, but don’t use them as full meals, they can’t possibly have the amount of calories you need ot be taking in.

  6. As long as your sole cup of coffee is the only caffeine that you take in in a day, you should be fine.
I have no idea what is in a zone bar. But as long as it doesn’t contain anything weird, then you should be able to have one once in a while. Ask you doctor.
I never got hair treatments when I was pregnant, and would probably advise you not to. Of course it’s a personal choice. So you and your doctor discuss it and decide what is best for you.
Other than the obvious drugs, alcohol, smoking etc… you know you really can’t take anything over the counter either right?
Except for Tylenol, claritin (only if you really need it to live) and plain sudafed, you should veer toward all natural choices.
For extreme headaches try soothing chamomile tea, warm baths with lavender extract, soaking your feet in hot water….
You catch my drift. Often moms will think something is OK just because one doctor said it was fine…. be sure to double check your doctor.
My midwife told me that my mother was wrong when she said I could take Pepto bismal (my mother is a midwife too!) and that I should never take it again. Everyone makes mistakes sometimes….double check your doctors’ information on the web, or with another doctor.
    Good luck!

p.s. the reason dyeing your hair is frowned upon, is not because of the fumes, otherwise you could just do it outside, or with a window open. It’s actually because the dyes (harmful) seep into your scalp and thus into your bloodstream.

  7. You could try decaf for the coffee, but one cup won’t hurt you or the baby.
As far as hair treatments, you may want to ask your dr…. I had my hair done during at least 5 of my pregnancies and was told by my doc that as long as I am in a well ventalated area it would be ok. Some Dr’s say no, don’t do it at all though.

  8. i went to see a fertility doc on Monday and told him that my hubby and i each probably have 3 caffeinated drinks per day and that i have a back issue that i occasionally take vicoden for….. he said that both were fine. I also asked about some vitamin supplements that my hubby takes and the doc said as long as its not hormones or steroids that we can continue the way we are. Keep up the Zone bars cuz they probably have tons of protein and that is really important to have when preggers and ttc. As far as hair treatments, that should be fine too but your body (hair) may react differently to them so be aware while pregnant. As long as you are taking a multi-vitamin each day with enough folic acid you are good. I also brought the supplements along that i have been takin to the doctor to see if i should continue or if it is a waste and he said they are great and i should continue, doesn’t know if they help but they wont hurt anything. I have been ttc for 3 months without a positive on the ovulation test but after being on these vitamins i got a positive ov test this month…. then hopefully a + on preg test in a few days! My husband and i are both taking “Fertil-aid” from the website
